How to Identify your Target Audience?

I can’t possibly imagine how many times you have heard the term “target audience.” Every blogger you’ll find out there, giving advice and suggestions to the entrepreneurs, have one thing in common. They all talk about the target audience. And if you are an entrepreneur, you surely know what the fuss is about. But if you are from that small minority who has never been introduced to the concept or have just recently started his own business, this guide to choosing your target audience is for you.

Just look at my last line. That line alone is enough to explain what a target audience is. This article is about choosing a target audience for your business and the people who will show their interest to read it, are the ones with no fixed target audience yet. This is how a target audience works. The people who “do not have a target audience” are my target audience for this post.

Now let’s get back to the part why my target audience came here, which is how to identify the target audience.

Look at your current consumer base

The best way to identify your target audience is by judging the characteristics and behavior of your existing audience. If you get to know what their initial reaction to your contents and services is, you’ll know if your services are for your existing customers or not.

Check your competition

Another efficient way to determine your customers or target audience is by checking up on  your competition’s audience. If you have a competition, then they are definitely doing something good. And if you can recognize your competition’s audience, you can work on driving them towards choosing your business over that competition.

Analyze your service/product

For this point to work, you need to write down every little detail and feature of the product you are selling or the services you are offering. Also, write down the benefits of each feature.

Once you write them down, ask yourself, who will be facilitated with your features, who will be benefited the most. If you can get the answers to those questions, you can definitely get to know your target audience.

Choose Specific Demographics

Apart from figuring out who has the need for your service, figure out who will buy it. To figure this thing out, you need to consider a few factors of your customers-to-be.

  1. Age
  2. Gender
  3. Location
  4. Education Level
  5. Income level
  6. Occupation
  7. Marital status
  8. Ethic background or family background

Consider the Psychographics

Also, make sure you consider the factors of your customer-to-be'spsychology. For example, consider these:

  1. Their Personality
  2. Values
  3. Attitude
  4. Behavior
  5. Lifestyle
  6. Interests/hobbies

Figure out how your service or product can help them in their daily life and lifestyle. How and when will they use it? If you can figure these things out, you’ll have a clear idea about your target audience.

Conclusion: When you are done identifying your target audience, you should remember to test your customers. Before launching something big, test if you are producing products for the right customers or not. You can do this by testing the market with small products and services within a small customer range.
